It May Not Look Like It But Only Good Things Are Going To Happen Here Today…

Their plan was to be childless, it seemed they had talked about it before they got married and they were both cool with it.  One day, while they were watching a football game at a bar, he told her he wanted children. They had an argument about it and she left him at the bar to take a seat outside in the cold. He went outside to apologize and said  “If it’s between you and having kids, you win. Every time. No question” To make up for their fight, they had a quickie in the restroom.

Nine months later, they were in the hospital, she was going to give birth to their triplets – the children they never planned to have, but were conceived from the makeup sex they had after an argument about not having children!

In those nine months, they had grown from a couple who didn’t want to have children, to a couple who could not imagine their lives without ALL the three precious babies they were expecting.

On the day of delivery, the doctor, who had described himself as the ‘best of the bests’ walked in to tell them there may be some complications.  Before he could finish his explanation, the expectant father shut him up; he didn’t want to hear it.

He said to him:

I am walking out of this hospital with three healthy babies and one healthy wife. I have three cribs at our new home that we bought specifically for three children. It also happens to be my birthday, which tends to be a great day in our house, the day when I get lucky. So, I am gonna need everyone in this room to believe that only good things are gonna happen here today, actually I don’t want you to believe it, I want you to know it. Do you know it baby? Do you know it Doctor?”

She looked at him and said, “I know it”.

The Doctor smiled and said “I know I like you”. The loss of his own first child had led him to become a doctor and he has saved countless babies for over five decades. But even though he was the best of the bests, he could not assure them that all three of their triplets would be fine.

Jack and Rebecca lost one of their triplets.

Jack looked through the glass to see the two who survived, but all he could think of was the one who didn’t.

Then he saw another baby beside them – a baby who had been found abandoned on the street. In that moment everything made sense to him.

Eventually, the baby who had just lost his parent went home with parents who had just lost their baby.

So, good thing did happen there that day.

My eyes welled up as I watched this episode of This Is Us. The line “Only good things are gonna happen here today  jumped out at me so strong, I could not breathe.

Some weeks before, while I was stuck in bed recovering from a major surgery (read about the surgery here), I had presented my list of ‘whys’ to God, I was not praying about them, I was just asking “WHY?”

I wondered why some things I want have not happened.

I wondered why some things I don’t want have happened.

I think I got my answer in Jack and Rebecca’s story – some people choose their paths, some people are “chosen” by their paths.

Sometimes, I find myself on paths totally different from the ones I set out to be on.

While I pray and work towards what I want, I am learning to trust that, at the end of all the present unpleasantness and uncertainties, good things will happen.

It may not be the ones I am expecting and it may not be how I expected it, but every seemingly bad thing can lead me to a good thing I never knew could exist, if I allow.

The good does not necessarily take away the pains of the bad, but it comes to serve its own purpose and to make everything align for a meaningful ending.

Now, my list of whys has become my list of whats. I lay my pain, shame and struggles before God and ask, “what is the good I can do with all of these?”

Has any good ever come out of your sad life experiences? Please share your stories with me in the comments section.

I will leave you with one of my super favorite songs of 2016!

…every seed of misfortune comes with it’s equivalent fortune, stop looking at the half empty cup, look at the half full cup, the blessings are just right there just keep calm and watch, you will say i said so…
